Welcome to the “The Hottest Place on Earth!” Here you will embark on a Ethiopia Danakil Depression tour like no other. The depression covers an area overlapping the boundaries of Eritrea, Djibouti and the Afar of Ethiopia. The Afar people have made the region their home. Their bodies remain remarkably cool in the desert heat while most begin sweating instantly. Over the centuries, their bodies have adapted to the conditions of the Afar region. Requiring far less food and water than most other people. Average annual temperatures hover around 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit)…yes it is very hot!
Begin the journey from Mekelle …before proceeding eastward towards the Danakil Depression region. Thanks to adventure tourism, it is now possible to drive within 6.9 kilometers of the Erta Ale volcano (4.3 miles). The trip was only possible by helicopter 15 years ago. Take a drive on “the worlds most difficult road to drive on”. All tours utilize well maintained 4×4 Land Cruiser vehicles. The Danakil Depression is among the safest areas to travel in the Ethiopia. All tourist groups are accompanied by an armed guard and an armed policeman. Trekk up the volcano on foot to see one of only six lava lakes in the world.
Continue exploring this strange region caused by the Afar Triple Junction…an area where three tectonic plates meet. The drive routes through the highlands of Ethiopia to the low lying salt flats of the desert. Exploring the multi-colored hydrothermal fields will make you feel like you are on another planet. The area around the Sulphur lakes is often used by scientist and researches to investigate how life may evolve on other planets. The Danakil Depression’s hot springs are home to microorganisms, extremophiles, that are able to survive in extreme conditions. Lake Assale provides magical mirage views as the shallow lake races across the salt flats for miles. Camel caravans extend across the landscape as merchants journey towards the markets.
